Ving Tsun (Wing Chun) Kung Fu is a
Chinese martial art that combines simplicity, efficiency and correct principles
to create a devastatingly effective self-defense system utilizing both striking
and grappling while specializing in close-range combat. Invented over 200 years
ago by Shaolin masters, Ving Tsun is the most popular Kung Fu system in the
world.
Ving Tsun is a principle-based martial art.
Simply put, a technique will work in a particular situation while a
principle will work in any situation.
Ving Tsun trains an instant response into the practitioner’s body in a
short amount of time through the practice of Chi Sao (sticking hands). While training Chi Sao with a partner, the
practitioner will learn how to trap the opponent’s attacks and how to attack
from “the original position” (i.e. the shortest and fastest path from a
defensive technique to the closets vulnerable area of an opponent’s body). The correct Ving Tsun stance is like a bamboo
stem, firm but flexible, rooted but yielding. This structure will either
deflect external forces or redirect them.
All Ving Tsun techniques are uncommitted. This means that if a technique fails to connect, the practitioner’s position and balance is less affected, allowing him/her to "flow" more easily into a follow-up attack. A series of attacks can be strung together to form a "chain of attacks". Chained attacks overload the opponent’s senses, break down his defenses and can even cause serious internal damage. Ving Tsun students learn to advance quickly, to get past their opponent's kicks or punches, and to attack quickly using an arsenal of close range attacks.
Ving Tsun is perfectly suited for men
and women of all ages. It does not rely
on the superior size, strength, or physical fitness of the practitioner, making
it an ideal martial art for anyone who is willing to learn. So come into either our St. George or our Cedar
City School to find out what you have been missing.
